Keep it Going During the Summer

by Kerry Taylor

Well, summer is here, and boy is it starting to heat up.  Talk about unusual summers, this one definitely is different than summers of the past.  We can’t slow the train down with everything going on around us.  With the summer here, there are some of us that put things to the side and lose their drive to accomplish things in different parts of their life.  Here are 5 tips to help keep you motivated throughout the summer.

1. Make a mini list of goals

We always talk of making goals, but I’m talking about creating a small list of goals.  If 5 is too much, then make it a smaller number that you can manage.  These goals I speak of aren’t the big ones you’re shooting for. They are more so the smaller ones that will lead to the big ones.  Grab yourself an index card to carry with you and write your 5 goals for the day down.  If you achieve all 5 you will know you’ve moved the needle forward.  You can also do this trick for the week, month or year.  The bigger the timeline the bigger the goal.

2. Find a tag team partner

This partner has to fit the criteria, what is the criteria?  Simple, mainly this person has to be in the same boat you’re in and shooting for the same thing, generally speaking.  By doing that, it will ensure you both stay motivated because you’re shooting for similar things.  You can also turn it into a challenge, whoever does X that day, week or month maybe treats the other to something.

3. Track your progress visually

A simple way is to create a calendar.  Use different markings to show how the day went.  You can use a green check mark for a great progressive day, a red X for a not so great day.  When you stand back and look at the calendar you can easily see how you’re doing each week, each month, each year.

4. Recharge: Take movement breaks

These breaks aren’t just meant for kids to get the energy out.  It’s meant for adults as well.  With the heat outside or being cooped up more than normal at home for work or at work longer than usual.  Your motivation and energy will be drained as time goes on throughout the day.  Adding movement breaks will recharge the battery for the rest of the day.  I will sometimes move my workout to the middle of the day to get ready for the rest of the day.  It doesn’t have to be a full blown workout, it can be a short workout, it can be a quick walk around the block, whatever works for you and your situation.

5. Get outside

Taking your work outside, you will instantly be more productive because that new area will spark some more energy because you are not use to it.  Take advantage of the opportunity you have to work from home.  Being in a different space will clear your mind and make you more productive.

You may have heard me say these 5 tips before, and if so, great!  Take this as a reminder to keep going.  No matter what’s going on, stay focused and keep charging ahead.  Until next time, continue to live life 1 degree above the rest.
