Do Things a Little Differently this Summer

by Kerry Taylor

The end of school is around the corner which means summer is almost here, which also means, for some, a few trips somewhere. Unfortunately, it also means, for some, that their health and fitness will take a further back seat in their lives. If this sounds like you, and you said to yourself, “Dang it! That’s definitely me!”, then I want you to take a different approach this summer. You worked hard, put in the effort and time to get to where you are now. Don’t worry about how far you have to go to hit some milestone, just look at how far you’ve come. That was a journey to get to this day, and you don’t want to lose all you’ve gained and take steps backwards if you can help, do you? If you said, “I don’t want to lose everything I worked for”, then ask yourself this question, “If I don’t want to go backwards, what do I have to do differently this summer than I may have done in the past?” Take a moment and list those things for yourself. How can you overcome those obstacles that may have been in your way the past? Some of the solutions may look like this:

  • Schedule appointments for the summer with your coach and stick to them

  • If you don’t have a coach, consider hiring one.

  • Plan your daily/weekly routine around getting your workouts in.

  • Start getting in earlier so nothing can derail you from your goal before the day can get started.

  • With it being Covid times, ask your coach if there are virtual options to keep you on schedule and under their watchful eye.

  • Allow yourself to not be rigid. If you only have 20 minutes instead of the usual 45 mins+, give yourself the flexibility to do what you can. Something is better than nothing.

  • Put your workouts in your calendar as you do all your other appointments.

  • If traveling, plan ahead: Is there a park or running path near you? Does the hotel have a gym? Is there a gym nearby? Will you workout in your hotel room? Or, if staying with friends or family, do they have a space for you to workout? Do you need to pack some travel-friendly equipment?

  • Sign up for a race or competition or something that happens at the end of the summer so you have something that you could be training for.

Here are some workouts you could always add to your library that will not eat up your time. Time is one of those roadblocks that happens often, especially when traveling. These 6 options will help keep you moving when on the road or short on time but want to get to the gym.

Remember, your health is your wealth. Don’t let the season make you go broke. Continue to make those deposits and your wealth in health will continue to grow! Until next time, continue to live life 1 degree above the rest!
