I had a sit down with a potential new 212er the other day. During our conversation I was asked, “should I workout everyday?” My short answer was no. My follow up statement was, “you can do something everyday to help your body make progress towards your goals, yes! You can do that. It doesn’t always have to be a no holds barred grueling workout though." Here are some ideas on what else you can do in the gym to help you continue to make progress.
Yoga
We truly believe that Yoga is one of the perfect compliments to strength training in the gym. Yin and Yang. Going through Yoga will help you to unlock new levels of flexibility and mobility in your body to create a more resilient machine! We offer Yoga, two Sundays each month, so make sure to check out the schedule for the upcoming classes. Namaste.
*for the month of June we will have Yoga 6/9 and 6/23 at 10am. Sign up here
Roll It Out
You don’t have to go very far to find out everything you need to know about Foam Rolling, AKA Solt Tissue Work, AKA Myofascial Release. For those of you that attend 212 on a regular basis, Lead Coach Sean St. Onge is a wiz kid with it. If you have a question, he has the answer. Foam rolling is a modality used to help release tension within the body to help you move better. Here are some videos for you to check out. Be on the look out for our next Foam Rolling/Soft Tissue Workshop, they pop up at least once a quarter.
Challenge Your Lungs and Heart
This can be done in many forms. Some of my favorites are running, boxing, biking or on the Ski Erg. Challenging a different system within the body will help you to get better overall and burn some extra calories if you so desire. I still consider myself an athlete albeit, not the same athlete I used to be, but he’s in there. Just like all of us, that athlete is in there, don’t be afraid to let him or her out. We can all train like athletes do. When it comes to doing bouts of cardio, I fully enjoy and prefer doing different forms of intervals.
Gym Class
What are some “non-traditional” gym things did you like to do growing up? That’s the stuff that would go here. In college it was usually playing basketball for a few hours with my teammates. It was a lot of fun to see how many games we could play in a row. I’m proud to say our football team would take over the courts when we got out there. It can be anything you would like it to be, if you enjoy swimming, go take a dip. Tennis? Go grab your raquet. Dance class, there are plenty around. We have a 212er that has a dance studio. I’m sure she would love to have you show off your dancing skills. I also play kickball and flag football. I have a great time doing both when I can fit it in. Anything is possible here, just have fun with it and fill your spirit!
Just Warm It Up
If you have a warm up routine or routines you do, how about you just make it longer? Instead of 10 minutes, let’s make it a 20-30 minute version. Give yourself time to have more concentration on your movements and flows. Add in a few other movements you usually wouldn’t do. It can and will help you. Follow the link below for some examples.

Even though you may think that you shouldn’t go to the gym everyday, I suggest that you do. But, what you may do in the gym can be a little bit different than the norm each time. All of this WILL help you make the progress you desire to see and help you make steps towards the goals you created for yourself. If you need help figuring some of this stuff out specific to you, you know we always have your back. Just reach out! Until next time, continue to live life 1 degree above the rest!
